Border Design

The border designs on the World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War monuments were created by Roderick Lee Grove in the summer of 1997 as he was preparing the signs for the Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall. Rod retells the story of the design’s creation as follows:

“I was looking for a way to combine the Native American design with a military design, so both would be equally representative on the veterans monuments. Since the diamond design is used in many Native American pieces of art and the star has always been as a symbol representing different aspects of the United States military, I combined both symbols to create the design.”
